FUS Hard Hat Update

June 25, 2008

Interior Garden: Another place to appreciate the stone we salvaged.

Greetings

From the sandy side of Shorewood Hills! This is moving week. Three FUS trailers are gone,  the Findorff trailer goes today, and the Nickles Electric office goes tomorrow. Excavation for sidewalks starts Monday, and the laborers are busy getting as much material off the lot or out of the way as possible.

Sidewalk Superintending

First, notice the stakes with the Day-Glo paint and streamer. They mark the edges of the new sidewalk and curbs.

At the west door take a look at the completed link: this glass passage creates a connection to the B-wing without disrupting its roofline. More of our salvaged stone went to extend the B-wing  “Garden Wall” into the link, part of Wesley Peters' architectural contribution to our campus (Peters was Mr. Wrights apprentice and the designer of the B-wing).

With the trailers gone, you can see the Meeting House reflected in the glass wall. The lawn outside the Hearthroom seems much larger than I recall. I think the new arrangement makes that lawn feel more protected.

If you peek through the fence from Marshall Court or from the Annex, you can see the topsoil waiting for grass seed. The silt fence will stay until fall to protect the rain garden from drifting grass seed.

Out of Sight

The Plaza Deck and Portico are getting prepped for another layer of insulation and more sealant followed by stone and pavers.

Inside, there is a lot of painstaking work. The complex angle where the choir shell turns the corner has taken two carpenters a week to perfect. The ironworker has been using cabinet-making precision with welder and grinder to get the steel railings perfect. The holes for the steel cable must be perfectly aligned, because any bend in the cable would be very noticeable.

The Music Offices are getting their final coat of paint, and the kitchen cabinets are nearly all installed.

Parking

Because of the excavation, there will no parking this week at FUS, and the building will be closed to visitors.

Volunteers

There will be more planting opportunities in the next few weeks,  so if you haven’t contacted Rae Gilbertson rg@mailbag.com, now is the time.

The Entry Vestibule. These metal frames will be painted red. To me it they are reminiscent of Japanese shoji screens.

East stairs: All these hole have to line up.
