FUS Hard Hat Update

July 3, 2008

Applying the second layer of Venetian Plaster.

Greetings

From the dustiest, messiest FUS campus ever. In a rash of activity on Monday, the entire parking lot and the a large amount of the sidewalk were carted off, leaving us in a world of sand and dirt.

Parking

The parking lot is solid and flat, and therefore “parkable.” However it is so sandy that walking or wheeling on it is not easy. There is pavement at the entrance, and there will be a temporary ramp, but there is no sidewalk to University Bay Drive.

Sidewalk Superintending

On the plus side, the temporary power poles have gone. And scavenging elves have removed almost all of the wood from the trailer deck. Reuse is the best recycling! The copper rim for the green roof is in place, and the final section of the retaining wall for the East Courtyard is formed up and ready to pour.

Inside the building

The railings are all up, and getting their coat of red paint. The Venetian Plaster wall behind the podium is getting its second layer, with two more to go. In the kitchen, the countertops are in and the dishwasher has arrived!
The bathroom fixtures have also arrived, and the piping in the geothermal/heat pump room grows ever more complex.
Fear not the Waterless Urinals! The trap is filled with a disinfectant oil that gets renewed monthly.

Volunteers!

The Preservation Committee at FUS is planning a workday to clean and restore our aging woodwork in the Historic Meeting House.  We will  need a couple of carpenters and also about 10 volunteers who would be willing to share a little elbow grease. We will be scrubbing, staining, and possibly replacing some wood. The event is scheduled for Saturday, July 26, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Your participation is deeply appreciated! If you wish to volunteer, please contact Rae Gilbertson at  608-655-4483 or email at rg@mailbag.com

Calling All Gardeners

Looks like we will be able to plant the west rain garden the week of  July 14. We have around 200 plant plugs and shrubs to plant. Please let Rae Gilbertson know if you are interested. We can really use your help! You can reach Rae at 655-4483 or rg@mailbag.com
