Greetings
From the "Saharan steppes" of University Bay. This week the project shifted into the "endgame." No longer needed materials are being stacked and carted away, leaving more dirt and sand in our view. The parking area must be cleared for excavation and paving.
One of the marvels of the Meeting House is the “Welsh Foundation.” The idea is that if a building site is dry, there is no need for footings to stabilize the building during the annual freeze/thaw cycle. While this worked wonderfully for the building, the paved areas outside the eaves have not fared as well.
So, we are carting out loads of sand and replacing it with crushed stone to make a better base for our parking lot.
Sidewalk Superintending
It’s all about sidewalk. A brand new path to the Meeting House, and a new ramp replaces two slabs of sidewalk that had sunk.
Inside
Finish carpentry is marching to completion. That should all be done by next week. Doors are going up. The veneer is "slip matched"; the slices of veneer (flitches) are arranged as though the stack of them were sliced off the log and spread like a stack of cards.
The first of the red floors are in: linoleum in the C-wing class rooms has arrived.
Landscaping
The rain garden is in, but unfortunately our dear Nancy Ragland required stitches after an encounter with a wooden stake. Work proceeds to the lawn outside the classrooms, then the east Courtyard, the Plaza Deck, and the lawn where the trailers were.
Future
The final finishing of the floors starts August 4. This will require a ten (10!) day period of absolutely no foot traffic. So please do not even think of peeking.
Next week General Heating will start activating the fans and pumps, plus there is testing of the elevator, sprinklers and alarms.
Volunteers
We are nearly ready to start terminating data cable and we can use more seeders and waters. I am still collecting woodworking ideas -- we would love to hear any you might have.
If you'd like to volunteer and you haven’t yet sent your name and interests to Rae Gilbertson at rg@mailbag.com, or taken the Member Interest and Talent Survey, please do so soon. We can use your talents and energy!
