First Unitarian Society Title

The Road Home Buddy Congregation

(formerly Interfaith Hospitality Network)

At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us. -- Albert Schweitzer

The Road Home of Dane County (formerly known as Interfaith Hospitality Network of the Madison Area) serves homeless families with children in collaboration with local faith communities and organizations. We are committed to the empowerment and long-term success of children and families, to serving each family with dignity and respect and to achieving results in helping families improve their lives. We welcome the entire community, in all its diversity, to participate in the pursuit of safe, affordable housing for all.

First Unitarian Society is responding the needs of the homeless and those who are facing a housing crisis. The Economic Justice Committee coordinates our efforts, but it is the members of our FUS community that are working on the front lines and making a difference in the lives of families with children and homeless men.

FUS serves as a “buddy congregation” in the Interfaith Hospitality Network shelter system for homeless families. We provide support for our partner, Christ Presbyterian, for one week four times per year. Christ Presbyterian is the host church where families stay from Sunday to Sunday. We help to provide meals, evening activities for children, and overnight hosts. Volunteers are also needed to help Christ Presbyterian set up before families arrive, and to take down the bedrooms after the families leave.

All of our FUS volunteers are asked to attend one of IHN’s trainings before assisting with the Buddy Congregation program.
