UU 101: Twenty Centuries of Religious Dissent, 2 of 2

For those who skipped or were never able to attend our NEW UU orientation sessions, one of which featured a cursory review of our denomination’s history from the Protestant Reformation to the present, this course is intended to fill that void. More than that, however, we’ll explore the theological, ethical, and political underpinnings of our faith tradition as they are reflected in controversies within the early church and before the imposition of the great Christian creeds. Moving forward to the 16th century, Unitarianism reemerges as one important movement within the so-called “Radical Reformation.” Surviving oppression and persecution, our tradition gathered strength during and after the Enlightenment, significantly influencing the sensibilities and outlook of some of the 19th century’s most notable figures. Unitarianism and Universalism have long been unique among faith traditions in their emphasis on freedom of conscience, the application of reason, and openness to change. For a finale, we’ll check out the forces and personalities that helped move first the Unitarians, then the Universalists into the denomination’s radically welcoming, “post-Protestant” position. The two sessions will feature a mix of lecture, DVD presentations, handouts and discussion. This class is taught by Senior Minister Michael Schuler.

Bring a Friend Weekend

On April 22 and 23, we invite you to bring a friend to one of our services. For many of us this community and the values it stands for are dear to us. FUS is an important part of our life. We want others to know about this wonderful place, but how do we talk about it? You could try something like this: “As you probably know, First Unitarian Society is very important to me. It is a place where I feel at home. Since you are someone who is also important to me, I want to invite you to see the place and meet other people who I also value. On April 22 or 23, our minister will speak on the topic of belonging, to one another and the earth.  Would you like to come with me?” Other highlights of the service will be special music by UU Peter Mayer as well as New Member Recognition. Since you know parking is at a premium, plan to carpool with your friends or ride your bikes (and celebrate Earth Day!). Let them know where to park on Marshall Court if they are coming on their own. There will be room in religious education classes for new visitors, so invite those friends with kids as well!

Rev. Crocker’s Celebration

You're invited to help us celebrate Reverend Kelly's 16 years of ministry at FUS! She has served us with love and dedication; it’s time to show her how much we appreciate her many contributions to the well-being of our beloved community. RSVP's are appreciated by April 30, to help us prepare for this event. We are collecting money ahead of the event, most of which will go for a cash gift to be presented to Rev. Kelly. The leftover money will be used to help defray the costs of the celebration. We will be providing a pizza and salad supper before the program and dessert and coffee afterwards. Several other smaller gifts for her are in the works as well. We hope to see you on May 20! Click here to register for this event. Click here to make a donation for this event. June 2017

Upcoming Parish Meeting

June 4, 2017 12:30 - 2 p.m. Atrium Auditorium Unitarian Universalism’s Fifth Principle encourages us to promote the right of conscience and the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large. We are heirs to a tradition that upholds popular sovereignty, which means that members of FUS have the final say on certain key questions: the calling of a minister, approval of an operating budget, the election of lay leaders, the expansion or sale of our facilities, the authorization of a capital campaign or the embrace of a moral cause. Your Board of Trustees, ministers, staff and fellow members strongly urge you to attend the Sunday, June 4, Parish Meeting as several important proposals will be submitted for congregational approval. Let your voice be heard and let your vote be tallied.  This is a time to let your UU flag fly high! If you have questions about the annual budget or the Sanctuary Movement, we’d encourage you to watch the Financial Forum video below for more information. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2AfjgADX9w And be sure to come early to enjoy delicious fare by the Food Haulers! Childcare is available if reserved ahead of time. View the proposed agenda and budget.
