April 29 & 30 – Bad Karma: Is Unitarian Universalism a White Supremacist Movement?

It is customary to affix the label “white supremacist” to hate groups like the KKK and Aryan Nation. But UU’s are now being challenged by people of color and their allies to explore whether this shoe fits us as well. We will be one of as many as 500 congregations grappling with this issue. At our own services I will try explain why this question has arisen, whether the history of our denomination supports the contention and how we at FUS might respond to it. There will be an opportunity for congregational conversation as part of our Saturday service and after the 11 a.m. service on Sunday.

On Saturday, solos will be played by guitarist Joe Harris. On Sunday, the Society Choir will sing The Size of Your Heart by Canadian composer Eleanor Daley.

I would like the mentally ill to be included in the groups of people who are recognized as under represented voices in the community.
I am requesting that the language of UU’s adjust to recognize the inclusion and recognition of the mentally ill.
If you think about it, the mentally ill are left out of the statement concerning Welcoming Congregations.

    We are not just others.

  2. Hi Nadine,
Thanks for this important reminder. We’ll be sure to pass it along to our ministers.
