Join in the spirit of hospitality and welcome! There are many ways to contribute to community life at FUS and help cultivate a sense of belonging for everyone from a first time visitor to longstanding members. Volunteering at FUS is a wonderful way to meet people while lending your time, creativity, expertise in ways that benefit our community and beyond. Scroll down for an overview of service opportunities, and watch the weekly newsletter, News From the Red Floors for current information. Contact Director of Membership Janet Swanson about these and other opportunities to be of service.
Worship Volunteers
At FUS, we show hospitality and welcome by caring for one another and our guests. To be a part of bringing this sense of connection to life, we invite you to join our Worship Hospitality teams at Saturday or Sunday services. Greeting, ushering, and providing coffee service are straightforward and rewarding tasks which benefit the entire congregation.
Training opportunities, either small group or 1:1 will be offered periodically.
If you’d like to join other worship volunteers, please complete this brief survey.

Front Desk Greeters
Our front desk volunteers greet visitors, answer phones, and assist staff with light tasks. These volunteers are often the first friendly face (or voice) visitors encounter.
Typical shifts are 10 am to 12 pm or 12 pm to 2 pm, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Training is offered.
To find out more about volunteering, contact Director of Stewardship Cheryll Mellenthin.
Connections Team
We welcome and accompany people as they explore how they might belong, participate, and grow in a spiritual home where Love is at the Center. Whoever you are, wherever you are on your journey, you are welcome at First Unitarian Society. We invite you to explore, to connect, and to share your spirit in ways that feel authentic to you. Whether you are drawn to worship, service, music, learning, justice work, or simply the quiet companionship of kindred souls, there is a place for you here.
The Connections Team does special projects and is present at weekend worship and FUS events to help cultivate an atmosphere of radical welcome.
Guardians of the Grounds
Join the crew on Thursday mornings from 9 to 11 am. Volunteers weed, prune, plant, rake and mulch the FUS grounds during the spring through fall months. Special clean-up projects will be announced through the Red Floors.
To confirm dates and projects, contact Chuck Evenson at cgevenson@yahoo.com or call 608-833-5991.
Friends of the Meeting House
Established in the 1970s, the Friends of the Meeting House is an organization affiliated with FUS. Every year, this organization hosts thousands of visitors through a guided tour of our Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Landmark Meeting House. The Friends provide education on the architectural significance of our building and help raise funds for its preservation. If you would like to meet interesting people from around the world and share our story, consider becoming a guide. Training is provided.
