October 7 & 8 – I Don’t Know Much About Indians
I borrow the title of these reflections from Gyasi Ross’ 2011 book. A member of the Blackfoot tribe, Ross is a keynote speaker at this year’s YWCA Racial Justice Summit at Monona Terrace. Most of us are only passingly familiar with the unfolding story of Native Americans following Columbus’ “discovery” of the New World. October 9 marks Indigenous People’s Day (formerly Columbus Day), a propitious time for this discussion.
On Saturday, the Teen Choir will sing. On Sunday, the Cherub and Choristers Choirs will sing. In addition, Native American inspired music for voice and Native American flute composed by
Douglas Hill will be performed by Heather Thorpe and Douglas and Karen Hill at all the weekend services.
